Description

Hertzoggies (also known in Afrikaans as Hertzogkoekies) are traditional, bite-sized South African pastry tartlets featuring a light, buttery crust filled with a dollop of smooth fruit jam and capped with a fluffy, golden-baked coconut meringue topping. Deeply woven into the country’s culinary heritage, they originated within the Cape Malay community and were named in the 1920s after General J.B.M. Hertzog, the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1924 to 1939, who was famously fond of them.
